we live in a world today where everything is analyzed by technology, you have a phone in your hand, your back pocket, your front pocket, your bag - it pretty much should be attached to your forehead at this point.  it's complicated, because social media is a double edged sword - you need it to advertise when you're trying to make something out of yourself, brand a company, etc. - but at the same time we're consumed by this technology that needs to let all of our "friends" on the internet know what we do, when we do and how we do it.  we're both abusers of this social media world.  we post pics, we snap, we instagram story, we boomerang - it's just how things go.

but - we also drop down to this spiritual level where we don't mess with our phones. coming to you from a super vibey place - we find peace in nature.  there's something about going to the beach at 5:45 am before work and opening up your day to being and feeling zen.  everyone has their own experiences, their own outlets of "zenning" or "vibing" out and it takes a lot today to be able to completely isolate yourself from the BS and be real with your own inner "true" self.

another outlet we have is just dealing with plants in general, there's something about it that just makes life seem complicated and simple in it's entirety, like getting lost at a plant nursery. there's something about spreading that positivity, or greenery to your surroundings.  it's amazing to see what a drop of nature can do in a concrete jungle, in a 400 square foot apartment, and even in front of or throughout a McMansion.  we pride ourselves on trying to find this inner peace - this total vibey notion that allows you to think freely, do freely and not deal with any BS of technology - except when it comes to photographing that green beauty.

just some food for thought - on keeping it real with yourself as a person, embracing nature, embracing your inner you and the things that keep you your own person, while focusing on spreading the good vibes always.

moving to the embankments

so - we started off with this idea, that hey, we're young, we're lucky enough to have jobs, we kinda sorta like each other, why not move in together? so ... we did what any young couple in ~love~ would do, and we decided to move to one of the dopest cities (we seem to think) in New Jersey.  i mean think about it, you have nyc right across the river, public transportation at your fingertips, hipster vibes everywhere you go, and let's not forget there are parks - tons of parks.  everywhere you go, somewhere, somebody is trying to make a green space or functioning space for people to use.  our feeling, dopest city in nj. so we moved, here we are, living in JC for the past 9 months, which might actually feel like forever for us at this point because it in any case feels like home.  so upon moving, we ended up being in an area where there are these not-utilized, historic embankments, these things are one of the coolest most epic characteristics of jersey city.  picture this - massive walls, about 2 - 3 stories in height, that used to cater to an elevated pennsylvania rail way bringing freight and goods to the hudson river, now inaccessible, not being used for trains and nature has taken over completely.

we live next to one of the coolest parts of jersey city ! as landscape designers, i mean at least for us, we look at every little naturistic, plant life, plantscape (again our word) detail that surrounds us.  no matter where we walk we're always talking about what we like, dislike, what we think we would do different, and so on and so forth.  our minds are constantly going.  people don't realize how valuable these embankments are, mainly because, they bring forth this man-made, now "untouched" piece of nature, to a highly developed and continuing to be developed city.  it's a pretty awesome concept.  who wouldn't want to live in a brownstone in jersey city, across from one of the greatest cities in the world, with an untouched piece of nature next to them or in their community?  .... let me know.

people don't realize how valuable nature and plants are to your everyday life.  besides bringing oxygen and doing all that scientific stuff, you get greenery, and shade, and spaces that are formed essentially for your use - who wouldn't want that? we personally think the embankments should turn into a park / highline-esque park ---  but what do we know, we're just landscape designers trying to make the world a greener place.

welcome to keeping up with the vines by yours truly, good vines only ! as our first blog post it's only right to introduce good vines, what we're all about, and ourselves (alyssa & shaun).

shaun and i are both landscape designers, pursuing careers that revolve around dealing with plants, people and the spaces that they encounter. so we thought, since we have this love for nature and plants, that we would take it to the next level of sharing this interest and love we have for plantscaping (our word for plant designing wherever) with you!

yesterday we took part in the all about downtown jersey city street fair.  it was by far the largest event we've taken part in and was an extremely successful and uplifting day ! we received great feedback from the people that attended the street fair and spread the positive vibes that we're all about with sharing our custom concrete planters, reclaimed wooden succulent gardens, air plant terrariums, and reclaimed brick planters.

our main goal is to spread good vibes wherever we go and our next stop is the east rutherford columbus day street fair on october 7 & 8.  we hope you follow us on our journey and the idea behind this blog is to open up the discussion of continuing to involve nature in our everyday spaces, indoor and outdoor, while spreading the good vibes at the same time. we'll keep you posted on our future endeavors and hope you're down for the ride with us.

always remember, keep spreading the good vibes, good things come to those who strive for it, karma is real so always show some love & let the good vines grow~
